“The Architect as World Planner (1961)”
Buckminster Fuller has a unique perspective on engaging the world throughdesign. After reading and analyzing “The Architect as World Planner,” several conclusions can be made according to his proposals on planning. Fuller strongly believed in developing a planning and designprogram, fitted to a global scale.
Fuller deeply describes the idea of encouraging architectural departments in educational facilities to teach students the art of total world planning. “The generaltheory of education at present starts students off with elementary components and gradually increases the size of the complex of components with which the student will be concerned. The scheme is to gofrom the particular towards the whole but seems never to reach the whole.” (Conrads, pg. 179) These two sentences describe Fuller’s main concern in this piece of writing. According to Fuller, in mostarchitectural schools students learn town planning, and as they advance in their careers, town planning increases its scale. However, Fuller describes how town planning only reaches the limit of bigcities. The author then expresses how students should be presented with problems where they have to plan and design on a global scale.
In my own perspective, world planning is simply impossible toachieve. While planning a country town, an industrial town, a city, etc., elements and components involved should go with context. All of these elements are pieces towards creating the “total work ofart.” However, on a worldwide scale, pieces wouldn’t be able to work together. Different architectural styles are defined by time and place. Culture and tradition, obviously also play a big role inarchitecture. This is what makes world planning impossible. It is not fair for an architect to propose ideas for a culture in which he lacks knowledge, or barely knows. In fact, I personally find it...
