The importance of medicinal plants in health care in three small villages of the
Santa Ana county at Trujillo state, Venezuela.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT

Con el propósito de rescatar información acerca
de la importancia relativa de especies de uso
medicinal en la atención primaria de la salud, se
evaluó cuantitativamente la utilización de plantas
en trescaseríos de la parroquia Santa Ana del
municipio Pampán, estado Trujillo, Venezuela. Para
ello se llevo a cabo un diagnóstico epidemiológico
local y la información etnofarmacológica obtenida
fue registrada mediante la encuesta TRAMIL. Los
datos se analizaron mediante el índice de nivel de
uso significativo (NUS) para determinar las plantas
con mayor grado de creencia popular en suspropiedades curativas. Los problemas de salud más
frecuentes fueron: gripe (21%), seguido por fiebre
y dolor de cuerpo (17% y 12%, respectivamente).
Se identificaron 29 especies de plantas medicinales,
pertenecientes a 27 géneros y 21 familias botánicas.
Entre las plantas medicinales más utilizadas para
tratar dichos problemas (NUS >20%) figuran:
Sambucus s p. "Saúco" (36,67%), M icromenia
brownei(SW.) Briq. "Poleo" y C itrus aurantifolia
(L.) Swingle "Limón" (26,67 %), seguidas de
Matricaria recutita L . "Manzanilla", E ucalyptus
globulus L abill. "Eucalipto" y Verbena litoralis
H.B.K. "Verbena" (20,00%). La forma de
preparación más común fue la decocción,
administrada por vía oral.

In order to gather some information about the
importance of medicinal plants in the primaryhealth
care, the use of plants in three small villages of the
Santa Ana county, Pampán municipality at Trujillo
State, Venezuela, was quantitatively analyzed. To
do this, a local epidemiology diagnosis was carried
out and the etnopharmacological information
obtained was recorded using the TRAMIL survey.
The significant level index was used to determine
those plants with the highest ratings ofhealing
properties, according to popular beliefs. The most
common health problems report here were: flu
(21%), fever and body pain (17% and 12%,
respectively). Twenty nine species of plants from
27 gender and 21 families were identified. Among
the most frequently used plants to deal with these
problems (NUS >20 %) were: Sambucus sp. "Saúco"
(36,67%), Micromenia brownei (SW.) Briq. "Poleo"and C itrus aurantifolia ( L.) Swingle "Limón"
(26,67%), followed by M atricaria recutita L .
"Manzanilla", E ucalyptus globulus L abill.
"Eucalipto" and Verbena litoralis H .B.K.
"Verbena" (20,00%). The most common preparation
form was decoction, administered orally.

INTRODUCCIÓN
Santa Ana fue fundada el 19 de Abril de 1653, por
el Obispo Fray Mauro de Tovar. Este pueblo es de
renombre histórico por el suceso que ocurrió el 27 de
noviembre de 1820: la entrevista y abrazo del
Libertador Simón Bolívar con Don Pablo Morillo,Jefe
del Ejército Realista, después de haber sido firmados
los Tratados de Regularización de la Guerra y el
Armisticio. Santa Ana está situada a unos 30 Km. de
la Capital del estado Trujillo, entre las coordenadas
9º 28' 30" latitud norte y 70º 20' 00" de longitud oeste,
y a una altitud de 1.600 m.s.n.m., dentro del municipio
