BIOLOGY SUMMARY
Cross section through a root:

Epidermis: covers the root, epidermal cells produce root hairs
Endodermis: each cell has a strip of water cells substances called casparian strip,which don’t allow H20 to go in, all water absorbed goes to the endodermis
Stele: xylem and phloem (transport and support tissue)
* Xylem: transports water
* Phloem: transports food
Cortex:parenchyma cells (store carbohydrates)
Pericyle: gives rigidity to the root
Root hairs: in the area of root hairs absorption of nutrients happens
Meristem: tissue that divides by mitosis producingnew cells
Root cap:
* It goes deep to the very hard surfaces
* Strong tissue, is able to brake the floor to go in
* Made of epidermal cells
* Produces mucilage to lubricate the root soit can go deeper

Root system:
* Fibrous root system: first there is just one root (radicle), then this one dies and all the others grow
* Taproot system: from the radicle the secondaryroots grow
-In winter they store nutrients in the roots, in spring all the nutrients go to the leaf.
Infiltration: water goes through the particles of the soil when it rains

Root:
* Don’thave chloroplasts so they don’t make photosynthesis
* Absorb water and minerals
* Anchors the plant to the soil
* Stores nutrients such as starch
* Is a strong organ, they hold thetree, plant, etc.

-Roots absorb water that has salts and ions.
-Earthworms eat plant bacteria and then they produce feaces and with that they fertilize the soil and let o2 to penetrate thesoil.
-Roots can’t grow if they don’t have leaves (they have food because of chloroplasts in the leaves) except if they store minerals on the roots)
3 ways by which H20 can get to the endodermis
*Apoplast route: water can move through cell walls because they are permeable to water
* Vascular route: water can move from vacuole to vacuole
* Symplast route: Water moves through...
