DAVID ESSAY

Summer is a time for people to have unforgettable adventures and experiences with friends, to learn from each other, and discover new things.
Early Birney wrote “David”, about twofriends having an adventure at the Rocky Mountains, David and Bobby, each have different view of life. David and Bobby are different in so many ways, like the approach on life, their roles infriendship and values on life.

David and Bobby both have different approaches on life. David is reckless. He wants to be at the top of the mountain no matter what. He does not think about danger. For himlife is a challenge, just like he represents it in a moment of caution, one bad move could have kill him “David clung with his left to a dint in the scarp. Lobbed the ice axe over the rocky lip,slipped from his holds and hung by the quivering pick”. However, Bobby is different from David. Bobby is more cautious. He is not careless, he does not make dangerous moves, and he usually does not findsolutions when they are in trouble because of his fear. He follows what David does “griming, he reached with his freckled wrist and drew me up after”. This explains how David found out the solution oftheir trouble, taking care of the danger and helping Bobby. The approaches to life of David and Bobby are totally different, and as a result they have different roles in their friendship.Differences in their friendship play an important role in the poem. David takes the role of leader, he figures out things. He teaches Bobby and helps him in dangerous situations, even if he gets him in trouble,because that’s what a leader does. For example as Bobby says “I swayed and shouted David turned sharp and reached out his arm and steadied me…but the strain crumbled his foothold, without a gasp hewas gone”. When Bobby was about to die, David saved him, looking as a hero, a leader, because David got in danger too, and he did not care about it. Bobby, on the other hand, is a loyal follower. He...
