Walt Whitman’s Poems
Walt Whitman talks about four poems in which he gives his opinion of different perspectives of America and humanity.
The first poem “I hear America singing” talks about thedifferent voices of the America people in their different types of occupation, which form part of the culture and life of the American people. Their different types of profession like the carpenter, themason, the boatman, the shoemaker, the woodcutter and the mechanics all are singing for the same purpose and feelings. Later the mother, the young wife and the sister are demonstrating the feelingsof happiness and joy reflected by the sensation of how they sing. Expressing their gratefulness and happiness for what they are giving in life and of what they are for the society.
The second poem is“When I heard the learn ‘d Astronomer”. I can reflect to this poem through the feeling of the listener. Which makes me think that he doesn’t really care about anything that the astronomer has to say. Itseems that he is only bragging about all he knows and has searched about the space, but instead the listener feels differently when he looks at the stars. It’s more of feelings that can’t be taughtabout. He just likes to go out in perfect silence and look at the stars. This is why I feel very touched by this poem, because it happens to me very often when teachers try to brag or teach somedifferent topic, but for one it’s a different feeling that can only be experienced in one’s own way.
The third poem is “A noiseless patient spider” makes me feel lonely because the spider is by it selfbut also depressed. The spider didn’t have any connection with the outside world, which reflects the feelings of the people since when they feel lonely they don’t have any connection with the outsideworld. The spider portrays a view that when one is lonely they tend to be stranded whit nowhere to turn or no one to turn.
The final poem is “O Captain! My Captain!” It makes me feel sad and happy...
