ABSTRACT
This dissertation examines the interaction of two main themes in the work of contemporary poets of Chile
and Peru:migration and "re-indigenization”. Jaime Huenún and David Aniñir, urban Mapuche poets, and
Gloria Mendoza and Boris Espezúa, poets from Puno, try to overcome their sense of displacement and
marginalization through the remembrance of past Mapuche and Andean communities. My thesis is that
their works express what Antonio Cornejo-Polar has termed a “migrant subject” who seeks to overcome
an identitycrisis through a process of "re-indigenization" in an attempt to renew the worldview, tradition,
and memory of these indigenous communities. From a comparative point of view, this research presents
the terms “la memoria mapuche” y “lo andino” as the key concepts that allow us to reflect upon the
process that returns a sense of wholeness and belonging to the work of the poets. They all have incommon the need to recover fundamental traits of their cultural past (ritual, tradition, community) through
their poetry. I also explore the concepts of third space and deterritorialization, inspired by the
theorizations of Homi Bhabha, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari; the transformation of the Andes into an
intimate sphere according to Estelle Tarica; and utopia and double consciousness, aided bythe theories of
Ernst Bloch and W.E.B. Du Bois.

El apoyo y el aliento de varios profesores, familiares, amigos y colegas hicieron que el
proceso de investigación y escritura fuera fructífero, lleno de momentos de inspiración y de
nuevos conocimientos. En primer lugar, estoy sumamente agradecida con Gwen Kirkpatrick y
Joanne Rappaport, mismentoras y guías en este proceso. Agradezco a Gwen por su sabia
dirección, su continuo apoyo a lo largo de todo este proyecto y sus infatigables revisiones.
Asimismo, las inquietantes preguntas, los estimulantes comentarios y las correcciones de Joanne
fueron indispensables para la realización de mi estudio.
Doy gracias a los poetas Jaime Huenún y David Aniñir quienes me concedieron
entrevistas en lasque pude aprender sobre la memoria mapuche, el pewma, el concepto
“mapurbe”, los rituales huilliche y acercarme a sus experiencias de vida como mapuche-huilliche
en Santiago y Osorno. Agradezco especialmente la generosidad de Boris Espezúa, Gloria
Mendoza, Luis Pacho y Feliciano Padilla quienes me recibieron en Puno y Arequipa con los
brazos abiertos, dispuestos a compartir conmigo su profundoconocimiento sobre la vida en el
Altiplano peruano. Gracias a ellos pude conocer el mito del Pez de Oro, la importancia del lago
Titicaca y sus entornos para los habitantes de Puno y acercarme a la rica tradición literaria
puneña. Agradezco también a Juan Ulises Zevallos-Aguilar su revisión final de mi manuscrito y
sus interesantes comentarios.
Un agradecimiento especial para mi compañero, DanielCastelblanco, por acompañarme
en todos mis viajes, entrevistar a los poetas conmigo y leer una y otra vez mis capítulos. Le
