Politics in Puerto Rico are influenced by multiple doctrines.

History has a way of repeating itself. It also teaches us that no political system, doctrine, or belief lasts forever. What may haveseemed as utopic thousands of years ago is now the norm. Society, most of the time, disposes of ideologies or tools that no longer serve its purpose. But, what happens to the good characteristics ofa particular doctrine or system when it is replaced by another? Most of the time, when the replacement is more democratic than tyrannical, the good characteristics are adopted. When change iscoercive, the political doctrines and beliefs kept reflect the interests of the dominant class. Inevitably, old political doctrines, systems, and ideologies give way to new ones.
The evolution of thedivisions of power and what we now know as state is complex. Political systems today are more comprehensive and less absolute in a particular political doctrine or current. Puerto Rico is no exception. Thestatus-quo in Puerto Rico is ambiguous. It holds almost all of its political powers, but it gives its sovereignty to the USA. Many find that controversial, but most Puerto Ricans do not know howcommon it is for a separate nation, or state, to exchange sovereignty for a common good or goal.
When asked what form of government rules them, most Puerto Ricans will tell you that they live in aDemocracy. But, is it? Is it a democracy or a colony? The answer is neither. To describe Puerto Rico’s whole status-quo one has to break down and itemize its political, economic, and social systems. Theprimary purpose of this analysis is to systematically deduce Puerto Rico’s status-quo, itemize the most noticeable political and ideological influences, and define them.
