Poor Academic Performance by High School Students

Nowadays, American students, especially those in high school, are generally doing very poorly in their educational path. Based on some studies made by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the top two subjects in which students are struggling the most are math and English. It is also highlighted that students who fail to graduatehigh school because of their poor performance are much less likely to be prepared to attend a four-year college or gain full access to our country’s economic, political, and social opportunities because of their poor educational skills and poor knowledge. Although schools are making a great effort to motivate and help out their students such as, helping them with tutoring and flexibility in thedecision of taking courses of their choice as long as they meet graduation requirements, performance by high school students is still very low. Some of the most relevant issues that students face while in school include problems at home, the low quality of education in public schools, and teenager’s issues.

The role of the parent in a child’s life is very important. Children need to feel somekind of support since they begin attending school, and usually, parents are this support, even when they start going to college. There are three aspects of families that highly influence the performance of students: family structure, family resources, and family practices. Student’s environment is important because if they live with both parents, they will have better changes to be successful beingthat separations and family segregation are stressful situations that badly affect students. Also, parent’s occupational status and family income are other causes of failing high school because parents who have good educational background are more likely to have highly educational aspirations for their children, they are constantly monitoring their children’s school progress involving communicationwith the school and instructors, and finally they are more interested in knowing the parents of their children’s friends and their children’s friends. Family income is another important factor involving good performance because young adults who have to work and go to school at the same time have less time to focus on their studies and they barely achieve the minimum educational standards for highschool.

In the United States, public education is suffering a terrible drop in the quality of the service it provides, most due to the many budget cuts the government imposes on the educational system. Schools no longer receive the same amount of money they used to get in past years, thus, their equipment is not up to date anymore, they cannot offer as many “after-school” programs due to thefact that the school cannot pay professors to stay over time to tech such programs. According to the Program on Education Policy and Governance of Harvard Kennedy School, many high-school teachers have master’s degrees, but most elementary teachers may do not. Therefore, this comparison may not be accurate for teachers of lower grades; school districts have imposed work standards on teachers tomake sure they are doing their jobs. These restrictions on teachers’ creativity have made teaching an even less desirable job than is indicated by the salary. Lesson plans and other reports increase the workload of teachers and force them into a uniform pattern. Of course, these work rules also discourage the most adventurous and creative teachers. Such factors have taken their toll on educationalong the years, and current students are suffering the consequences, as well as the country as the people of the future are going into the work more unprepared, which makes it even more difficult for them to find jobs later on in their lives.
