Pop Music
Introduction
It’s usual to confuse pop music with popular music. The New Grove Dictionary Of Music and Musicians, the musicologist's ultimate reference resource, says the Pop music, hasprimarily come to describe music that evolved out of the rock 'n roll revolution and continues in a definable path to today.
Since 1950's pop music has been identified as the music and the musicalstyle that has the widest audience. This means the music that sells the most copies, has the largest concert audiences, and is played most often on the radio.
Pop Music and Song Structure
Pop music isvery different (written, performed, recorded) compared with a symphony, suite, or concerto. The basic form for pop music is the song and this song consists of verse and repeated chorus. The songs arebetween 2:30 and 5:30 minutes length. Here we can find a notable exception in one of the most popular songs ever of The Beatles: "Hey Jude" that was an epic 7 minutes length song.
The Pop MusicMelting Pot
Like other art forms like movies, television and Broadway shows, pop music has been and continues to be a melting pot that borrows elements and ideas from other musical styles like Rock,R&B, country, disco, punk, and hip hop over the past 5 decades.
Pure Pop and Power Pop
Even there’s a melting pot in pop music, we could find that there is a genre of pop music that claims to bethe purest form of pop music. It’s usually called pure pop or power pop, the songs are not over 3:30 minutes, played on a standard electric guitar, bass and drums with vocals that have a very strongcatchy chorus.
In the top pure pop or power pop performers of the past are the Raspberries, Cheap Trick and the Memphis group Big Star. The Knack's #1 smash hit "My Sharona" is often considered thebiggest power pop chart hit. Nowadays groups like Jimmy Eat World, Fountains of Wayne, and Weezer  have been seen as successors to classic power pop.
