Porque Es Asi
During my early years as a non-believer, Islam occupied a space in my mind morally superior to that of Christianity. I would condemn Christians in the same breath that I praised Muslims for their humility and moral goodness. After reading the works of Ayaan Hirsi Ali and listening to a particular speech by Sam Harris, I can no longerallow such compartmentalization to exist in my worldview. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all equally bad.
Judaism is the oldest of the Abrahamic religions, and so is where I will begin my explanation for my dislike of the Big Three. Before I continue, I’d like to clarify that I hold no animosity towards Jews as an ethnic group. Nor, for that matter, do I harbor any hatred towardspractitioners of Judaism. My attitude towards religion and the religious is an ironic reversal of the old Christian maxim “hate the sin, love the sinner.” Jews have done wonderfully in reforming their religion to fit into a modern world, but I have read the Old Testament. I have read the passages promoting slavery, genocide and the objectification of women. I have read the passages claiming that the earthis flat and square, and that pi is equal to three. Serious thinkers cannot read these passages and claim that they contain any moral, scientific or philosophical insight. For the time, Judaism was progressive. An example is how YHWH gives specific instructions on how much and in what manner one is to sacrifice livestock. At the time, a question that many asked was how much is enough? How big of asacrifice is required to please the gods? YHWH gave a definite answer. For the time, that’s progress. Also, Judaism is not the world’s oldest religion, nor is it the world’s oldest monotheistic religion. Many indigenous religions predate Judaism, and the mantle of “Oldest Monotheistic Religion in the World” goes to Zoroastrianism, a Persian religion that shares roots with Hinduism. Judaism actuallyborrows from neighboring paganisms as well as Zoroastrianism. Judaism began as a polytheistic religion, evolved into a henotheistic religion before becoming the monotheistic religion we know today. It was THE religion of a single race and single nationality, and has only become the world religion it is today through aeons of distortion and reform. I cannot respect Judaism because of its moraldegradation, scientific ignorance and inauthenticity. I am a proud gentile, and always will be.
I hope to someday delve deeper into how Judaism evolved from pagan roots, but that is a subject for another post. Next is Christianity, which is not free from the historical distortion that Judaism underwent. Christianity is nothing without its prophet and founder, Jesus of Nazareth, whose existence isquestionable at best. Jesus was a supposed faith healer and teacher that lived during the Roman occupation of Palestine. During his lifetime, there were three groups of practicing Jews. One was the Pharisees, a political and religious movement that was popular amongst lower-class Jews. In a nutshell, they believed in bodily resurrection during a messianic age and a balance between destiny and freewill. Their main theological enemies were the Sadducees, a group popular amongst the aristocracy and priestly class who believed in free will and that there is no afterlife whatsoever. Jesus notably condemns both of these groups, putting him into the same camp as the Essenes. This camp believed in predestination, pacifism, abstinence (sometimes complete celibacy), communal living, and refused totake oaths. Their teachings fall in line with many of the teachings of Christ, leading some scholars to speculate that Jesus belonged to some denomination of the Essenes. Many of Jesus’s teachings, such as giving away all possessions and severing body parts that cause one to sin, also seem to indicate that he and his followers believed the end of the world was near. In fact, during his ascension...
