1. DESCRIPTION OF THE REGION

Barcelona is the capital and the most populous city of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid, with a population of 1,621,537 within its administrative limits ona land area of 101.4 km2 . It is the sixth-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Ruhr area, Madrid and Milan. It is also Europe's largest metropolis on the Mediterranean coast. It is located, as I mentioned before,on the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs and is bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola ridge. Barcelona isrecognised as a Global City due to its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and, of course, tourism. Indeed, it is a major economic centre and a growing financial centre (Diagonal Mar area); one of Europe's principal Mediterranean ports can be found here as well as Barcelona international airport, which handles about 30 million passengers peryear. It also boasts an extensive motorway network and is a hub of high-speed rail, particularly that which will link France with Spain and later Portugal. Barcelona was the 12th-most-visited city in the world and 4th most visited in Europe after London, Paris and Rome. It is in addition the most popular tourist destination in Spain (receiving over 5 million tourists every year).

The Port of Barcelona is fitted between the new river mouth of the Llobregat river and the neighborhood of ``la Barceloneta´´. The great tourist industry of the region has done of the Port of Barcelona the major one of the Mediterranean in cruises, and the fifth one of the world only behind the ports of the Caribbean sea.The industrial force of the region has turned it intoone of the major ports of goods of the Mediterranean, thanks to his Zone of Logistic Activities (ZLA) and simultaneously to have a direct access to the center of Barcelona and connections with the principal ports of the world.
The port can be divided in: the commercial port , the civil port (cruises, ferrys, zones of leisure, the Port Vell) and the energetic port and the logistic port.
Theterrestrial surface of the port is 828,9 hectares, and it has more than 20 km from wharves and moor. In this space are located 35 specialized terminals which are distributed in: 3 maritime ones for ferrys, 7 international ones for cruises, 4 of containers, 2 of cars, 1 of fruit, specialized 2 (cocoa, coffee), 1 refrigerator, 9 of bulk liquids and 6 of occurred in bulk.
The Port of Barcelona isplaced in a strategic enclave, being the major port of cruises of the Mediterranean and the fifth of the world. It Possesses 313 regular lines, and it´s connected to 423 ports of the whole world.
