Objectives
Students should gain anunderstanding of the following:
• How newspapers serve as primary source documents for historically significant events.
• How the newsworthiness of a story is determined by impact, time,location and reader interest.
• How newspapers determine story placement based on perceived newsworthiness, editorial considerations and readership.
• How readership, location and competitionfrom other news stories influence how a story is presented in the newspaper.
• How a newspaper’s layout and style are deliberate.
• How a newspaper’s mission is to be fair, accurate and clear.Activities
Students will:
• Respond to analytic questions and tasks.
• Familiarize with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper.
✓ Activity 1
•Students will look at four types of news media from a single day:
a) A local newspaper
b) A front page from another state (available for the current day at http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages ).
c) An international online news site (for example, news.bbc.co.uk, english).
d) An online blog (for example, huffi ngtonpost.com or drudgereport.com ordailykos.com or politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com or andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com or michellemalkin.com).
• When they finish, they will have to answer the questions below:
- Which newsmedia that you looked at seems to cover the most stories? Why do
you think this is?
- Which of the media covers the fewest stories on a daily basis? Why?
- Which of themedia has the most national coverage? The most international coverage?
- In the case of stories that appear in more than one place, how does the coverage differ
