The Czech Republic became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, along with Poland and Hungary, on March 12, 1999. It became a full member of the European Union on May 1, 2004. (The Czech Republic is scheduled to host the rotating EU Presidency during the first half of 2009.)
In 2007, the Czech Republic provided humanitarian help of a total capital sum of aroundCZK 66,5 million. The highest amount of money (more than CZK 10 million) went to Afghanistan where the Czech Republic financed projects aimed at ensuring drinking water sources, on the construction of schools and on the health project.

The Czech Republic joined NATO after many years of general preparation on March 12, 1999.
NATO is a political-military organization that guarantees, for the first time in the history of the Czech Republic, the highest possible security based on cooperation of most European countries and transatlantic partners. Membership also calls for demandingengagements consisting of political and military support of allies in the case of threats and/or conflicts.
The Czech Republic participates constantly in the United Nations (UN); World Trade Organization (WTO); International Monetary Fund (IMF); Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); International Energy Agency (IEA); North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and theInternational Whaling Commission.
