Poverty in Mexico

“The mother of Revolution and Crime is Poverty”- Aristotle. Good afternoon to everyone, today, I will talk to you a bit about something that should concern every single Mexican:poverty. Sometimes, we don’t even notice it, but have a good look; it’s on the streets, malls, trash bins, traffic lights, and so on. How is it possible we do not care about the sixty millionpeople, half of Mexico’s population, who are living in poverty? Of whom 20 million live in extreme poverty?

Poverty is defined as the lack of the basic necessities: food, public services, education anda home. What we usually concern about is food, but having no food in your stomach goes beyond hunger. Psychological problems emerge, and dominate the organism. This affects the family and thechildren’s development.

Let’s talk about the last point, kids suffering poverty in Mexico. Imagine this, only in Mexico City; there are 1,900,000 kids in extreme poverty. Now, have you got an idea ofHermosillo’s population? It’s around 850,000 inhabitants. This means that there are like 2 Hermosillos made out of poor kids, only in Mexico City. Would you like to do something about your own country?Before passing to the next step, helping those people, we have got to analyze the factors that lead us to that situation. These factors are political, geographic and individual.

The amount ofeducation, skill, and health, refer to the individual condition. The lack of education is one of the most important factors that contribute to poverty. If there are non-educated people, there is noaccess to jobs.

The second cause has to do with geography, for example, living in rural areas. These areas are poorer because transportation and communication is hard to reach. There is no potablewater and essential services.

The third and most significant is the political economy of Mexico. International institutions such as the IMF and World Bank lend money to this country to encourage...
