Prejudice and Discrimination Project

When somebody talks about discrimination everybody think in Africans, Hispanics, and now in these days Indus, but only few people knows that even in their own Countries exist the discrimination and racism. I chose to make a trip to India to learn more about the culture and to see something differentthan what we used to think here in the United States, but to my surprise I found that there were also discrimination and prejudice as well. I found a group called “Dalits”, first of all you have to know that the Dalits are a ethnic group because they are compose by a mix of people from around South Asia, that is why they do not have the same race and what hold them together it is the ethnicity, beliefs, thoughts, and the way they think. “Dalit, a term of self-identification meaning crushed or broken in Marathi’; a regional language of southwest India, refers to those people at the very bottom of India’s social hierarchy”. (Caste Discrimination and Minority Rights: The case of India’s Dalits, page 328). Even though the Dalits have more than one religion and they speak more than one languageas well.

The Dalits, like many people know them, preferred to be called the untouchables. Dalits is a ethnic group that suffer many discrimination in their own Country, they are group of people that society believes that they do not deserve any right because of their poorness, In India there are many religions like; Hindus, Yainas, Sikhs, Zoroastrians, etc. But the Dalits in most of thecases are Christians and Muslims; they belong to those two religions because they are a big group from all around South Asia that might be why they also speak more than one language. “Something like two thirds of the total population of India live in the villages or country areas away from the main towns and cities. That is about 800 million” (India’s untouchables: The Dalits, page 186) and only 160million people from those 800 are in the lowest scale, which are the Dalits.

It is amazing how this type of discrimination still in our world and even worse with in the same population of the same country. The life in India is based in a caste system, which is not clearly enough, and it exists since many years ago. The origin of the caste system may be based in different theories, some arebased on the religion, other refer on the social history of India and the many migration that the country has known and some others preferred to use the biological like the natural superiority over other humans, what it is true is that all agree that this system is based on the classification of people according to their purity, which is marked by the family in which one born. The caste system isbased in four groups going from the highest position in a job thru a simple labor person who serve higher caste but the Dalits does not get in that rank they go below the labor, they are in charge of doing any type of job that others do not like to do, like working on sewers, drainage, incineration of corpses, cleaning toilets, or any other job that involve physical contact with blood or excrement, and the salaries are very low even though thee jobs have a high risk of sickness or have a high degree of difficulty. The Dalits even have to deal with the bad treatment of people with other higher caste lie discrimination, like they are not allow to eat with the same cutlery that people with higher caste and most of the time they suffer lynching, if a person want to hit somebody they can use theDalits to do it since the police and nobody going to do something about it. It is pretty sad to see all these in India, people suffer and others do not care, how can these be? How anybody have heart to stop this? That is what people like me ask them selves every time that get to see something like these. Some of the times I feel very sad about it, but it is true there is noting that any body can...
