Nobel Prize in Medicine
The Nobel Prize has been awarded to 100 times, for a total of 195 awards including the 2009 Nobel Prizes. No winner has won the award in this category in more than one occasion.
Only two Spanish have been privileged to achieve the Nobel Prize for Medicine in the hundred times it has presented the award: Santiago Ramon y Cajal succeeded in 1906 for his research on thenervous system and Severo Ochoa, who succeeded in 1959, ex aequo with Arthur Kornberg "for his discovery of the mechanisms of the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic".

What is the procedure for nomination and selection of the winners of the Nobel Prize?
It is the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in charge of appointing the Nobel Prize for Medicinefrom candidates recommended by the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. This committee is responsible for making the final selection of candidates is made up of five members elected for a term of three years under the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation, and the Secretary of the Nobel Assembly said, which a total of 50 members has elected by teachers university medical matters pertaining tothe Karolinska institute.

Who can describe the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine as candidates for Nobel Prize?
In September each year the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine confidential sends invitations to qualified people in the field of physiology and medicine, to propose names of candidates for the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

These people cannot be qualified to vote forthemselves. Among these skilled people are previous winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, Karolinska Institute members, members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, or university professors in the field of physiology or medicine in the Scandinavian countries. Proposals for qualified workers should be sent to the Nobel Committee before January 31 of the following year. The Committee duringFebruary examine the proposed names the Nobel Prizes. Between March and May the Nobel Committee consultation with various experts the names of these preliminary candidates. The Nobel Committee made a report gathering all the information and send it to the Nobel Assembly. In this Nobel Assembly will discuss the report at two separate meetings. In early October, the Nobel Assembly shall, by a simplemajority of its members, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. This decision is final and will be communicated immediately in all available media.

Any information concerning the nominees for Nobel must remain secret for 50 years. This restriction applies to all persons involved in the nomination and selection process.
Funding for the Nobel Prize in Medicine
Since 2001, the amount thatgoes to the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is 10 million Swedish kronor, slightly less than 970,000 euros and just over $ 1.4 million dollars.
