Introduction

This document describes the basic installation and configuration for Microsoft’s DNS server, which ships with Windows NT® Server 4.0.

Installing DNS

Before you install DNS on the server, it is recommended that you configure the DNS settings found under TCP/IP Properties (in Control Panel, double-click Network,click the Protocol tab, select TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties) with the proper host name and domain (see Figure 1.). This is necessary so that an A record for the server is automatically created when the zone is created.

To install Microsoft DNS, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and then click Properties (see Figure 2).

In the Networkproperties window, click the Services tab, and then click Add (see Figure 3).

In the Select Network Service dialog box, select Microsoft DNS Server and click OK (see Figure 4.

Note: It is necessary to have the retail version of Windows NT Server 4.0 in your CD-ROM drive. The necessary files required for installation of DNS are found in the I386 folder. Also, if anyservice packs have already been installed on the server, they must be reapplied after installing DNS. For more information about service packs, please refer to the Readme files that comes with the service packs.

Configuring the Microsoft DNS Server

The Microsoft DNS server is configurable by using the DNS manager. To open the DNS manager, click Start, click Programs, click AdministrativeTools, and then click DNS Manager (see Figure 5).

The Domain Name Service Manager window appears as shown in Figure 6.

After opening the DNS manager for the first time, it is necessary to add the server to configure it. Select Server List as shown in Figure 6, and then click New Server on the DNS menu as shown in Figure 7.

Type the IP address ofthe network card or the NetBIOS name of the server on which DNS is installed; click OK. Figure 8 assumes the DNS server has an IP address of 140.10.0.5.

The server will appear in the server list as shown in Figure 9.
