Se denomina presidencialismo o sistema presidencial a aquella forma de gobierno en el que, constituida una República, la Constitución establece una división de poderes entre el poder legislativo, poder ejecutivo, poder judicial y el Jefe del Estado, además de ostentar la representación formal del país, es también parte activa del poder ejecutivo, como Jefe de Gobierno. Ejerciendo,pues, una doble función porque le corresponden facultades propias del Gobierno, siendo elegido de forma directa por los votantes y no por el Congreso o Parlamento. La república democrática presidencialista más conocida en la historia contemporánea es Estados Unidos.
