Message from Alan Garcia, President of Peru
Peru is privileged in its relations with the Asia-Pacific region, because it is a natural route for political relationships and economic convergence. It intends to consolidate itself as agateway to access the entire South American region. Peru chairs the APEC during 2008 while Lima will be the venue for its summit meeting. In addition, Peru has subscribed or is negotiating Free Trade Agreements with countries on this region, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Thailand and Singapore. In addition, relations with the European Union are at a peak level of understandingbased on common values such as democracy, free trade, the protection of human rights and the State of Law. Negotiations are underway for the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and the Andean Community of Nations, while the Fifth EU-Latin America Summit will also be held in Peru this year. Above all, Peru welcomes all private entrepreneurs who seek to increase sustainedwell being in our territory and an increase in global economic dynamism. Our ultimate goal is to contribute towards consolidating prosperity, political stability and peace, both within our region and in the international community.

V EU-LAC Summit
“Poverty and Sustainable Development” The V EU-LAC Summit to be held in Lima will gather Heads of State and Government; Ministers; personalities andsocial leaders from 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, and 27 countries of the European Union. Together, they will reflect on the problems related to “Poverty”, analyzing in depth “Inequality and Inclusion” and addressing the “Sustainable Development” regarding the “Environment, Climate Change and Energy”. This international event aims at encouraging a new dialogue to agree onconcrete actions in order to speed up the political and economic association process between the two blocs of countries, which common cultural roots would imply a natural association.

APEC – PERU 2008
“A New Commitment for Asian-Pacific Development” Peru has been given the honor of assuming the Chairmanship of the APEC Forum and becoming the host country for said event. In 2008, Peru and its regionswill be hosting high-level working meetings that will congregate the officials (SOM) of the 21 states that constitute the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). These events will include the Annual Meeting of Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministers and the ABAC Executive Business Council. The Peruvian economy’s sustained growth is characterized by substantial reforms aimed at opening markets,reducing transaction costs, overcoming obstacles to investment and trade, and strengthening institutional and individual capacities. With this perspective, in the APEC forum, Peru will present a proposal to reach “A New Commitment for Asian-Pacific Development”.

This business meeting will be held from November 20 to 23, 2008 in the city of Lima, Peru, land of great civilizations and a dynamic economy.
