YOUNG DARWIN
Charles Darwin was born on the 12th of February in 1809.
Did you know that he was the fifth son of Dr. Robert Darwin and his wife Susan?. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was adoctor, a writer and an inventor, and was one of the most exceptional Englishmen of the 18 th’s century.
At first, Charles Darwin was sent by his father to study medicine in Edinburg, but he did not enjoyit. Instead he went to University of Cambridge to become a clergyman, which he enjoyed much more. At Cambridge he became friends with Adam Sedgwick, whom he accompanied on his trips to collect rocks.This interested him a lot.
PREPARATIONS AND THE TRIP TO SOUTH AMERICA
Like a lot of young students, Darwin often dreamed of a trip to exotic places. The opportunity of his life came with hisfriend John Henslow who proposed Darwin as a natural scientist for a trip with the British Armada to various places of South America. With the help of his uncle, Darwin obtained the blessing of his fatherto go on this trip. His sister Susan helped him to get all the necessary materials.
As a natural scientist, Darwin had to think of a way to collect and carrefully preserve various samples ofdifferent animals, plants and minerals, as long as possible, so that scientists in England could study them afterwards. He always kept the record of where and when he found them.
Can you guess the name ofthe ship that sailed to South America? The ship that finally sailed on the 27th of December of 1831 after many delays was the “Beagle”.
The accommodation on the ship wasnt the best because Darwin hadto take out a drawer so that he could put his feet there because his bed was too short. But he got along well with everyone on the ship.
The first stop on the trip was Brazil. There Darwin began tomake his studies of flora and fauna.
