IVO Science Fair 2012: Great Argentine Inventors

Project for 5th Grade

General Aims:

• To involve students in meaningful activities to learn about dulce de leche, one of the manyArgentine creations.
• To integrate the students’ knowledge of the topic in Spanish by doing interrelated activities in English.
• Help learners gain a sense of achievement.
• Inspire studentsto make their own creations or inventions.
• Share their knowledge and creations with the school community.

Specific Aims:

• To learn about the history of dulce de leche.
• Towork in groups and choose a recipe that includes dulce de leche as its main ingredient.
• To be able to write a recipe in English.
• To make a poster on the recipe.
• To follow a recipeand prepare a dessert to share with the school community at the Science Fair.
• To be able to explain the recipe in English at the Fair.

Planning

Final Task: Students will prepare desserts(with dulce de leche) to bring and share at the Science Fair.

Language Content

Grammar: Imperatives (Recipe Verbs)

Vocabulary: related to food, cooking and recipes.

Process:

Pre-TaskA) Talk to students about the Science Fair and what the Project is about.

B) Ask students to research (in Spanish) on the history of Dulce de Leche.
(This can be asked for homework the previousclass).

C) Write Dulce de Leche on the board and brainstorm ideas connected to this product. Guide them through questions to elicit details on its history.


Task 1

A) Ask students if theylike cooking and if so, what they have cooked and if they have ever followed a recipe.

B) Bring a recipe you like to share with your students.
Prepare activities to work on the recipe (Focus onverbs and vocabulary).
