1. Martha is fourteen years old. She is pencil thin, not a curve anywhere. She was called “beanpole” and “string bean.” She had a flat chest,no hips, and a brain. Had toothpick legs, and is Mexican.
2. Martha’s goal was to win the scholarship jacket, because she had been astraight A student since the first grade, and this last year she had looked forward very much to owning that jacket.
3. Martha overheard Mr.Schmidt and Mr. Boone arguing about her, and the scholarship jacket.
4. Martha reacted to the conversation by going home very sad and cried intoher pillow that night so her grandmother wouldn’t hear her.
5. The outcome of the Scholarship Jacket is that Martha gets the jacket.
6.The conversation between the teachers made me feel sad, because I wouldn’t want my teachers saying that I wouldn’t get a reward for my hard work.No, this has not happened to me.
7. The person who encourages Martha is her grandfather. Martha’s grandfather told her “then if you pay forit, Marta, it’s not a scholarship jacket, is it?”
8. My mom and teachers encourage me to do my best because they want me to have a goodcareer.
9. I encouraged my mom’s friend to continue her job, because she wanted to drop out, but she was doing well in her job.
10.Martha’s grandfather has a similar personality like me because I would encourage someone who I think can do the job correctly to keep doing their job.
