The Hudson River is a major landscape feature in the New Jersey-New York metropolitan area and its influence covers hundreds of
square miles upstream and far out to sea. Over the years humans have used it as a transportation corridor, a dumpingground, a food
source and a recreational setting. At the same time, wildlife has sometimes struggled and sometimes thrived in its numerous
habitats. Our Hudson Home enables visitors to learn about estuary wildlife, the inter-relationships between nature and humanity,
and how human choices and actions affect the ecological health of this great river.
1. The program begins with a view of the estuary
2. The students will brainstorm the connection between geometry and estuaries
3. Symmetry and asymmetry will be discussed, the students will participate in a kineticactivity and estuary creatures will be used
to illustrate.
4. The students will do a pencil and paper activity illustrating hexagonal best fit.
5. Fractals will be discussed using our stream table to model riversystems and observe the patterns that emerge.
6. Time is allowed for questions and answers.
Objectives:
Geometry – symmetry 3013
Identify shapes with lines of symmetry using concrete models and pictures (e.g., fold symmetrical pictures in half to reveal the
line of symmetry). D B
Patterns, Relationships, and AlgebraicThinking The student uses repeating patterns and additive patterns to make predictions.
2002 Identify, describe, and extend concrete and pictorial patterns in order to make predictions and solve problems (e.g., when it
rains, based on days with similar weather, will the class hold PE inside or outside). SE1.4 – B (Introduction)
