Sunset for IBM i V5R4 … Again
February 7, 2012, IBM Announcement
For the 2nd time IBM has announced withdrawal of maintenance support for IBM i (OS/400) effective
09/30/2013. The first time this was announced, feedback from the user community led IBM to
change their strategy. IBM i was withdrawn from marketing in June, 2011. Users that need to remain
on a supported OS release will have 18 months to upgrade to V6R1 or V7R1. IBM also announced
several programs to help customers with the migration. Also announced was a Statement of
Direction to provide extended support for V5R4 after the withdrawal date to customers with SWMA
for an additional fee.
Live Partition Mobility for IBM i V7R1
Live Partition Mobility is a PowerVM function that allows a Logical Partition (LPAR) running on one
server to be moved to another server. This function has been available to AIX V6R1 users on Power
servers since November 2007 and will now be available to IBM i V7R1 users in a future Technology
Refresh, expected later this year. Most IBM i users only run one or two OS instances and will not
need this function. That is because IBM i is a multifunction server and can comfortably run multiple applications concurrently, unlike LINUX or WINDOWS where a server per application is the rule.
Nonetheless, Live Partition Mobility is an important step forward for IBM i in keeping up to date with
current OS environments.
Charges Dropped, Rational Open Access Goes Free
February 6, 2012, Dan Burger, IT Jungle
There'll be no confetti dropping from the ceiling or champagne corks popping, but IBM's
announcement that Rational Open Access: RPG Edition becomes available as a free PTF beginning
February 14 deserves a little fanfare. Here's a technology with a lot of promise, the native GUI
interface as some call it, that's finally available without blood, sweat, and tears poured into the ordering process. And, even better, without any licensing charges.
The PTFs are the short‐term solution to getting RPG OA into the hands of those who have complained
to IBM for that past two years. By May, RPG OA will be integrated into the RPG compiler and
therefore included in the purchase of IBM i 6.1 and 7.1.
Rational Open Access: RPG Edition, which is easier to talk and write about if it's shortened to RPG OA
(if the Rational trademark police isn't around to rough you up), is a method that allows RPG opcodes,
which have limited interfacing capabilities‐‐DB2 database tables and 5250 display files are two
examples‐‐to interface with devices and resources RPG was not designed to support using its I/O model. Web browsers, mobile devices, Web services, XML files, external databases, and spreadsheets
are some of the examples.

AURA Launches Alternative PHP Server Stack for IBM i
January 16, 2012, Alex Woodie, IT Jungle
AURA Equipments today launched iAMP Server, a free collection of software for running PHP
workloads on the IBM i server. iAMP is composed of binaries for several products, including PHP, the
standard Apache Web server, and the MySQL database. AURA says it developed iAMP, which runs
primarily in the PASE AIX runtime, to provide IBM i shops with a standards‐based alternative ...
