Virtualization 1: Experiments with VirtualBox

Objective Summary:
We want to get experience with running services on a Virtualized server. For this, we willinstall a
minimal operating system, called JeOS Ubuntu, on VirtualBox. Once we do this, we shall explore
how to endow it with basic services.
Introduction
As we have seen in class, we can usevirtualization to run multiple kernels and operating systems on
the same hardware. There are different levels of system virtualization and solutions, each having
their own tradeoffs, depending upon thetask and engineering goals. The two major groups are:
hardware based virtualization, where the VM sits directly on top of the hardware, and operating
system level virtualization, where the VM sitson top of a host operating system.

virtualization is the ability to have a sandbox to use as a testingground, which is often easier than
modifying an actual build directly on top of hardware (especially if we are making kernellevel
changes). In this way, VM sandboxes help(ed) us to isolate our changesto a disposable virtual
machine, reboot and rebuild our test OS many times without making the workstation unusable in the
meantime . Virtualization is also useful in that it adds additionalabstractions, which makes an
installation of an OS and software portable and recoverable, among other things.
VM can also provide basic services, such as a web server or act as database servers. In thislab, we
will investigate the installation of a minimal operating system, called JeOS, which stands for just
enough operating system and it’s simply Ubuntu’s core. JeOS comes with Ubuntu serveredition
and we will install it into a Virtalbox
