When families shop for a new car, safety features are an important consideration. Many of these features, such as seat belts,are standard in all cars. In the past ten years, auto makers have developed a number of new safety systems to prevent accidents. Some are now available incars, while others are still in the planning stages.
The makers of most new cars have installed front air bags for the driver and the passenger and manymanufacturers also offer side air bags.
Many car manufacturers offer telematics systems as an option. These expensive services use global positioningsatellite technology. Lf you are lost, the service gives you directions. Lf you are in an accident, the service calls the police. Lf you need an ambulance, theservice can call for emergency help and give your location.
Car bumpers have also changed. In the past, a light impact would cause thousands of dollars ofdamage. Today, a five-mile-an-hour crash will not seriously damage a car. Drivers may need to replace the plastic bumpers, but there is little damage to thecar body.
A few manufacturers are also working to develop a “wandering’’ detection system. Drivers on highways and freeways sometimes become sleepy ordistracted. Cameras in the car check the position of the car. Lf the car seems to be traveling too much to the left or the right of the center of the lane, awarning sound goes off.
Auto makers continue to develop new safety systems. Many are still in the planning stages and will not be available for several years.
