Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States self-governing status, located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of theDominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands, the smallest of the Greater Antilles, and a number of smaller islands and cays, of which the largest are: Mona, Vieques and Culebra. Puerto Ricans areU.S. citizens since 1917, when the U.S. Congress passed the Jones Act. Although his relationship with the U.S. is similar to that of a state of the Union and allowed the drafting of a constitutionfor the management of internal affairs. Puerto Ricans can vote in presidential elections in the United States only from U.S. soil, not from the island.

History

The natives of the Taino tribecalled the island Boriquén, meaning "Land of Our Lord Almighty and Bravo" which evolved to name “Boriquén”, a name still used in reference to Puerto Rico. The island of Puerto Rico was discovered onNovember 19, 1493 by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage of exploration. These were given to the Spanish gold for mirror, after a while the Spanish conquered the island and and used the indians likeslaves. Puerto Rico is a Spanish-speaking island. Legally is bilingual, in the sense that both Spanish and English are official languages, Spanish being the vernacular spoken by the majority of thepopulation.

Population

According to the U.S. Census, in Puerto Rico in 2010, thepopulation was about 3,725,789 inhabitants. In America the Puerto Rican population now exceeds 5 million people.

The island has different Cultural folk rhythms like Bomba and Plena, musicJíbara or Trova, and six different bonuses, in classical music, the Puerto Rican danza. Currently its rhythms with the international boom are Salsa and Reggaeton. The latter, with foreign roots...
