"Work and labor in this new and wild land are very hard": A German Migrant in Philadelphia, 1750
Overwhelmed by all abuses against the right of poor Europeanpeople, Gottlieb Mittelberger wrote his book "Journey to Pennsylvania in the year 1750." Enlightenment movement had started and this was another reason to empower it. Europeans were brought to the NewWorld to be sold as if they were property. They were punished for trying to reach freedom, and in worst scenarios, they were thrown to the sea if they died on board (Gottlieb, par. 14). Aftermigrating to North America, Gottlieb was horrified by the ways Europeans were treated. He decided to go back to Germany and write his book in order to point out the dangers to be faced. He observed thatGermans who didn't have an official contract were put for a bid. It wasn't like during 17th century, when Europeans migrated as indentured servants. There was more cruelty this time; families wereseparated and even children had to serve until they became adults. It's better to work honestly in ones's homeland than to be a slave without property, freedom, and family in America (Gottlieb, par. 13).A passage to be paid separated families. Ships carried many passengers who weren't able to pay their passage, but if they had children, they could free themselves by trading the child. Trading a childfor freedom ? It sounded as an option back them. Today, smacking a child could lead parents to prison. It all depended on the age of the child for a parent to have the opportunity to gain freedom; ifthe child was under five years old, the parent was supposed to give him away and still will be in debt. On the other hand, if the child was 10 years old or above, the parent was free to go while thechild had to serve until he was 21 years old. Children would face the worst part of cruelty; they were a means for their parents to received what they were promised (freedom and a suit of clothes),...
