QUESTIONS ON DORIAN GRAY

Chapter 1
What is the purpose of the preface in italics?
The main purpose is to answer to the different criticism the author and his novel received after its publication. He also hints how society of that age prefers to criticise the novel instead of recognising themselves in it. As a last fact, I want to point out that it is in italics because it is anaddition to the novel.

Who is Dorian?
A young man who is the model for Basil's picture.

Does he appear in this chapter? Why?
He does not appear physically in this chapter, but he is mentioned and we are explained several facts about him. Because he is not in Basil's place yet.

Who is Lord Henry?
A friend of Basil's. He is a rich gentleman and has a complexcharacter.

Who is Basil?
The painter of the picture of Dorian Gray.

Can you summarise Henry's philosophy of life?
His philosophy of life is hedonistic.

Chapter 2
Is Lord Henry a good influence for a young gentlemen?
It depends. We have seen in this chapter how his influence drives Dorian mad to the point in which he decides to kill himself when he grows old. However, Ithink that despite this fact, he also challenges the mind and valours of young people, and that may make them think or widen their view of things.

Does Basil take seriously what Lord Henry says?
He does not. Actually when Henry is talking to Dorian he is painting, and doesn't pay attention to what Lord Henry says.

Does Dorian take seriously what Lord Henry says?
Yes, hedoes take it seriously, to the extreme he cries because he will grow old and says that he will kill himself.

What is a panegyric?
A formal speech used to praise someone.

Does Lord Henry like the picture?
Yes, he does. He even wants to buy it.

Does Basil like the picture
Yes, he considers it his masterpiece.

Does Dorian like the picture
He does notlike the fact that the painting will always be the same, his young and beautiful self, while he will grow old and wrinkle. However, he likes the picture.

What do you think happened when Dorian prayed?
His wish becomes true.

Chapter 3
Who are Isabella and Prim?
Isabella refers to Isabella II, Queen of Spain
Prim refers to D. Juan Prim military leader of Spain who playeda major role deposing Isabella II.

Why does Lord Henry go to visit his uncle Lord Fermor?
He wants to know things about Dorian's past.

“Came to Madrid once when I was there”, is that sentence OK?
It is okay because in the previous sentence we already have the subject “HE”, so now we understand that it was the same “he” who came.

What does Lord Henry think aboutinfluencing others?
He thinks that there is nothing like it (in a positive way). He qualifies it as “perhaps the most satisfying joy left to us in an age so limited and vulgar as our own” He is, in fact, decided to influence Dorian.

What do you think Wilde thought of American novelists?
IDK (If we have to guess this through his vision of American woman, he thinks of Americannovelists in a pretty harsh way).

What does Lady Agatha think of the way men think?
She thinks that men are always arguing.

What do you think was Wilde's opinion about English readers?
Well, his opinion is that “of all people in the world the English have the least sense of the beauty of literature. And I think that it is difficult to generalise about an entire country, andprobably he is wrong, because some of the greatest writers of history are English.

Chapter 4
Who is Victoria?
Lord Henry's wife.

Why does Victoria like Wagner?
Because his music is so loud that you can talk with no one knowing what you are saying.
What's Lord Henry theory about women?
He differentiates two kind of women: the plain and the coloured. The plain ones...
