Performance Management Writing SMART Goals
SMART goals provide clear direction so you know what is expected of you, when it is expected, and how you will be measured. SMART goals are specific,measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Here are the three steps to writing a SMART goal. 1. Write the S, M, and T components of the goal, in that order. The specific component of your goalshould begin with an action verb. After starting with an action verb, describe “what,” “how,” “for whom,” and/or “with whom.” The measurable portion includes the quantifiable performance targets by whichthe goal will be measured during the checkpoint and summary dialogues. For example: • Customer Perception: What customer satisfaction measures will apply? Examples: customer satisfaction index, numberof complaints. • • • Quantity: How much or how many will be done or made? Examples: “all,” “5%,” or “50 product pieces.” Quality: How well or how thoroughly will the work be done? Examples: accuracy,defects, rework. Cycle Time: How much process time will be saved? Examples: intervals and deadlines; reduce cycle time in getting a product to market from 12 months to 8 months. Cost: What will theexpenses be? Examples: revenue, budgets, overtime.



The time-bound part of a goal is tied to a time-period. When will it be accomplished? Describe exactly the period in which the goal is to beaccomplished. Break large projects and strategies into smaller goals that can be achieved within the performance year. 2. For the goal, ask the questions associated with S, M, and T. Modify the goal ifnecessary. • Specific: Does the goal describe exactly what I am expected to accomplish, including how, with whom, and/or for whom? • • Measurable: Does the goal use either numbers or specific words todescribe what is considered successful completion? Time-Bound: Does the goal describe the exact period in which I am expected to complete it?
