The amount of crime-particularly street crime- is rising in many cities, and governments in many countries are taking action to try to fight it. But in a lot of communities, the people themselvesare also trying to solve the problems in their own areas. Crime has an effect on everyone in a community, and more and more people are realizing this , and want to help find a solution. Young peopleare often blamed for crime, but young people are also victims of crime. What´s more, a lot of young people are getting involved in projects that are trying to solve the problem of street crime.

Atypical project is the Acting Against Crime project in Toronto, Canada. There is one particular area in toronto which is wll-known for its street crime. For young people who grow up there,drugs andviolence are a normal part of everyday life, and it is very easy for these young people to slip into a life of drugs and crime. However, two community workers and a group of seven 16-21 years olds want touse theatre to communcate their message that the community itself can change people´s lives. They intend to write plays which they will perform in local schools and in the streets, showing how thearea can change and be improved. They want people to start talking about crime and to start taking responsibility for stopping it.

Young people are active in london too, with many local projectsaimed at educating young people and reducing crime. Teenager Ozzi Brker Told us, ´Knife crime is really bad in London, but a lot of young people only carry knives because they´re scared. We need toget ridof this fear, and get people talking to each other.´ Maybe communities and groups of young people will achieve success where the police have failed.
