The Reconstruction Era

With the confederate’s defeat, the civil war over and the south’s devastation, the reconstruction era began with many plans and solutions for the south. The UnitedStates was successful at granting social, economic and political rights of African Americans, but it failed at protecting these rights.


When President Lincoln was reelected, the congresspassed the Thirteenth Amendment, which ended slavery in the United States (America: Pathways to the present, 414) African Americans were no longer slaves and they enjoyed their freedom, they did not haveto work long hours or be treated badly. What they now wanted was to learn and to have the opportunity of education. “A general desire for education is everywhere manifested…Not only are individualsseen at study, and under the most untoward circumstances, but in many places I have found what I will call ‘native schools’. ” (Doc. C) Knowledge became important for their lives, people of all ageswanted to acquire it.


However groups opposed to the ideologies of the Republicans were created in the south. The Ku Klux Klan was one of those groups; they dedicated to threat Republicansthat lived in the south as well as their followers. “The Klan sought to eliminate the Republican Party in the south by intimidating Republican voters, both white and black.”(America: Pathways to thePresent, 442) The Ku Klux Klan believed and promoted white supremacy, therefore they acted with violence to achieve their goals. “They were all disguised…It was the Ku-Klux…They had taken out an oldman by the name of Charles Watson. They commenced beating him” (Doc. J) The Klan thought that by terrorizing people they were going to be able to impose what they really wanted for the south.In the economic area, the Congress created the Freedmen’s Bureau to support the liberated African Americans. “It was the first major federal relief agency in United States history” (America:...
