John Steinbeck was born and raised in the Salinas Valley of California. There, he acquired his lifelong love of the outdoors. Steinbeck graduated from Salinas High School in 119 and went from there to Stanford University in Palo Alto where he stayed five years. Then he traveled to New York where he took odd jobs while trying to write. When he failed to have his work published he returned toCalifornia. In 1928 they gave him paper for his manuscripts, loans that allowed him to give up a warehouse job and focus on writing. After a while Steinbeck gained worldwide praise not only for the Red Pony also for several other novels. In 1948, the year of the book was published. Steinbeck was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1962 Steinbeck won the novel prize for literature.In 1966 he traveled to Israel because he wanted to published the story of his grandfather how was murder by a Arab in 1858.
John Steinbeck died in New York City on December 20, 1968 of a heart disease and congestive heart failure.









THE RED PONY
THE GIFT (Part I)
“The Red Pony” a novel written by John Steinbeck relates the story of a little boy, Jody, and his life in theoutdoors. Mornings were a routine in the ranch, there was Billy Buck, the right hand in the ranch, Carl Tiflin, Mrs. Tiflin (parents of Jody) and Jody. Every morning, Mrs. Tiflin rang a triangle to let people know that breakfast was ready. Jody woke up by the sound of the triangle. After Jody eats his breakfast, his mother gave him his books and lunch to go to school. When it was four o’clock hetopped the hill and looked to the ranch to see if the horses were on the stable. At night his father came back and told him that he has to join him the next day at the morning because he needed his help. The next morning the ringing triangle woke him up and he went to the dining-room for breakfast. After breakfast Billy his father and he went on to the stable, Carl had a surprise, he had a box forJody and inside the box there was a little red pony. He told him that he needed someone to take care of someone and he was so shocked that he could never believe that the red pony was his responsibility. He went on to touch the nose of the little pony but he smelled him and bit his hand. Billy told him that he was too young to be ridden but in a little short time he could do it. He told Billy thatif the red pony hasn’t a name he can call him Gabilan Mountains. Billy told him it was a very long name that instead of that name he can call him Gabilan. Billy also told him that if he collected tail hair he would be able to make a hair rope for him sometime. Jody was so excited that he invited six boys over to see the pony. From that day on Jody never let the triangle wake him up he wake up alittle more early just to go to the stable and see Gabilan. Billy helped him to managed Gabilan so he can ride him soon. Billy kept his word at the next day the training began. His father told him that Gabilan was starting to be a tricky pony and tricky horses are not good they have not dignity so he told him that he has to start getting him used to the saddle pretty soon. He hunched and reared andthrew the saddle off before the cinch, it had to be replace again and again until the pony let it stay. Gabilan was growing fast, because of the constant brushing his color went to an orange-red lacquer. His father told him that Gabilan was growing faster than he thought so he can be riding him by thanksgiving. He was practicing for thanksgiving so he can ride his new horse by then. Every weekendthey went on a trip all over Salinas just to practice more.
PART I -B
This part of The Red Pony presents Jody after several weeks of training and getting to know Gabilan. Later, his father (Carl Tiflin) tells Jody that he will be allowed to ride the horse by Thanksgiving. Eventually, Thanksgiving arrives and Jody wants to ride the horse, but he had to go to school.
