Can you really tell a person´s musical preference by the way he dress? As the years pass by, people get interested on identifying themselves with somekind of group, in this case with urban tribes. The urban tribes are a group of people that share ways of thinking and express it with the music and their clothes.
For example, the people thatlisten to Oi! are called skinheads and can be recognized for use brands like Lonsdale, Ben Sherman, Fred Perry or Everlast; they dress polo shirts or tank tops(plain or with text or designs related tothe skinhead subculture), bomber jackets, super skinny jeans (Levi´s, Lee, Wrangler) or cargo pants with suspenders; most of them use Dr. Martens boots but recently adidas or Gola football-styleathletic shoes have become popular among skinheads. They can be confused with the Neo-nazis because they have a similar haircut and clothes but they use nazi symbols like the swastika and the imperialeagle.
Another musical style that can be identified by the way of dressing is the heavy metal; those who listen to it are characterized by using black clothes, like leather jackets, skinny jeans,leather pants, military boots, belts with pins and T-shirts with logos from the bands (Metallica, Iron maiden, Slayer), they also have very long hair.
If you see somebody with baggy clothes, biggolden or silver collars, bandanas, big sneakers or hardworking boots, football or basketball jerseys, big caps and use these kinds of clothing brands like Rocawear, Ecko, Sean John or Phat farm, so youconfront someone who likes rap and hip hop.
In the case of popular music (indie, dance, salsa, pop) there isn’t an specific way of dressing because those genres don’t have an ideology thatidentify them, also because the majority of the people listen to many musical styles and they can’t be categorized in a specific style, they follow the fashion tendencies to update their wardrobe.
