Mother-child interaction: A comparison of children
with and without language disturbances

RESUMEN
El propósito del presente estudio fue identificar las habilidades maternas e infantiles implicadas en las interacciones madre-hijo en niños con y sin problemas
de lenguaje. Con ese fin, se evaluaron videograbaciones de la interacción entre
madres e hijos en tres grupos: niños con antecedentes familiares y problemas de
lenguaje, niños sinproblemas de lenguaje, y niños sin antecedentes familiares ni
problemas de lenguaje. Se encontró que las participaciones de las madres en
este último grupo se distribuyeron entre todas las categorías de conducta aplicadas, cosa que no ocurrió en los otros grupos, lo que indica una mayor diversidad en dicha participación. Estos hallazgos indican que las díadas normales
son más activas yorientadas al control de la conducta que los grupos que tienen problemas de lenguaje o con antecedentes familiares de ellos. Finalmente,
se encuentran diferencias en cuanto a la estructura de interacción, las que se
discuten en el contexto de las relaciones madre-hijo.

ABSTRACT
The aim ofthis study was to identify the maternal and infantile abilities
implied in the interactions mother-son in children with and without language problems. Video recordings of the interaction between mothers and

children were evaluated inthree groups: children with familiar antecedents and language problems, children without language problems, and
children without familiar antecedents and language problems. It was found
that mothers’ participations in the last group were distributed among all the
applied behaviors categories, fact that did not occurred in the other groups,
indicating a greater diversity in such participations.These findings indicate that normal dyads are more active and oriented to the behavior control
that the groups that have familiar language problems or antecedents of them.
Finally, there are differen-ces in the interaction structure, which are discussed in the context of the mo-ther-son relations.
