Limits on Unions Pass in Michigan, once a mainstay.
A summary of the article:
According to an articlepublished on December 11, 2012 in the New York Times by Monica Davey, the Republican-dominated Michigan Legislature approved statewide changes to the way unions will be financed. The legislation, signed byGov. Rick Snyder, is the latest in series of setbacks to organized labor in states where it has traditionally been strong, such Indiana and Wisconsin. National labor leaders predicted a backlash andsaid they were weighing options in the courts and in future elections. Michigan became the 24th state to enact right-to-work laws, when Michigan Gov. Snyder signs two bills allowing workers thechoice of paying for union dues. Snyder signs Michigan anti-union ‘right to work’ measures over protests of thousands. Opponents of the new legislation say it will lower wages for the average worker,while advocates of RTW believe it will bring more jobs into Michigan.
The legislation here bans any requirement that most public and private sector employees at unionized workplaces be made to pay duesor other fees to unions. In the past, those who opted not to be union members were often required to pay fees to unions that bargained contracts for all employees at their workplace.
But the changemeans vastly different things to the two sides. Advocates say that it is attractive to businesses looking to move and that it allows workers to make choices about unions.
Critics believe thelegislation invites workers not to pay union dues, decreases unions, and tends to drive down wages. Many opponents expressed fury over the process here as well, one that Democrats denounced asrushed, sneaky and “under cover of darkness”.
