After settling down in Boston, and finding out that his wife was being seen with disgrace and repugnance, the reader remembers Roger Chillingworth as Hester’s real husband,who changed his name and entered Boston as a great physician who knew a lot about medicines, and he was made quite popular because of this. He did not want to stand beside Hester while she was beingoffended and rejected by people, what he desired was to take revenge, and he knew how to accomplish that goal.
He was now known as Roger Chillingworth, people received him as a physician because thatwas how he introduced himself to society. Everybody accepted him quickly because no doctor ever visited Boston, so it was something glorious to the town of Boston to have a physician that could helpthem. He knew many things about herbs and many other natural resources that could provide him new ways of how to elaborate medicines.
Everyone worried about the health of Reverend Dimmesdale, hishealth had begun to fail. He always touched his heart when he was giving out the mass, and he looked thinner every time people saw him. However, he rejected any suggestions regarding to his health. Hehad the conviction that he did not need any medicine, and that if he was going to die, he was going to accept his destiny as a true believer. His prophetical voice had a touch of melancholy, and thepaleness in his skin was indicative of pain. He felt overwhelmed with the pleads of people, so he finally agreed to have a doctor see him.
The role of Roger Chillingworth was very active as a doctorwho wanted to help Reverend Dimmesdale. He had the idea that besides wanting to cure the Reverend’s health, he had to connect with his personality.
