Thank you ladies and gentlemen. Today we are debating the resolution: Teens that commit 1st degree crimes should be treated as adults.
I’m Ricardo Portés, and we inthe negative team strongly disagree on this resolution. We will give you these two reasons: Kids don't deserve this kind of punishment and Teenagers are emotionally unstable
Teenagers have problems,they indeed do; we all had our doubts and our confusion during our adolescence. Which brings me to my first reason:
Lets say you have a 10 year old boy, and this boy killed a friend of his because thekid wouldn’t stop bothering him, he saw a gun, he grabbed it and BANG. If he was an adult, he would be doomed for 20 years of prison, but he probably did not know what he has done.
Evidence:According to Robert J. Hedaya (a recognized Clinical Professor of Psychiatry) Teenagers are developing their ideas, since their brain is not fully developed, their ideas are not either; due they confusionthey can make mistakes which some of them do not actually mean to, it is common for kids to make mistakes. This mistakes also can be influenced due a life experience they had or the media in mostcases.
For my second reason: Let’s say the kid actually knows what killing someone actually means (that would be the case of an 13-17 year old), would prison really fix them? Kids deserve to have achance, adolescence is a time of changes and trouble, they are developing their thoughts. But they won’t learn anything at all if they stay behind the bars their whole judge. What they really need at thatage are parents, friends, maybe a psychotherapist: They can’t handle so much responsibility and guilty; nowadays adolescence suicide is becoming common in our newspaper, do we really need another youngteenager killing himself? Prison won’t fix them, it will break them to pieces.
In anyways, they won’t be “unpunished” you should get an eye on the “juvenile courts”.
