Initially, Chief Brody reveals his passive behavior and exposes his vigilance of life. Being the Chief of Policeof Amity, Brody displays his desire to protect the city and its population. However, he fails to demonstrate his willingness to do so. For example, Brody refuses to take anyone out of the water uponviewing the great white annihilate a child’s body. Yet, he enters the water after receiving information regarding his son’s life being harmed. This ignites Brody’s conversion from a cautious person to areactive individual. Furthermore, Chief Brody’s companions, Quint and Hooper, have an influence on his changing demeanor.
After meeting Quint, a former WWII veteran, and Hooper, a marine biologist,Chief Brody is determined to go into the ocean and battle the great white. The presence of such personalities modifies Brody’s ideas of what “safe” is. For instance, Quint gives advise to Brody abouthis cut, “Don’t worry about it Chief, it won’t be permanent.” After Quint says this, the Chief feels as if he is being overcautious and finds it necessary to take care of all hardships withtranquility.
