• WHAT IS EURO?The euro (€) is the official currency in 16 of the 27 member states of the European Union. The states, known collectively as the Eurozone, are Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia,Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Portugal. The currency is also used in five other European countries.

• WHERE DOES THIS DENOMINATION COMEFROM?

-HISTORY: The Treaty on European Union, in force since 1993, provides for the creation of an Economic and Monetary Union with the introduction of a single currency (which was then thoughtto call ECU). It would be part of the countries that met certain conditions, be introduced gradually. The original date was delayed. Finally, member states of the European Union agreed on December 15,1995 in Madrid the creation of a common European currency already under the name "euro" - with date of entry into service in January 2001.
