Palladio, Andrea, Four Books on Architecture I. The First Book on Architecture A. Palladio spends the first book further elaborating on the work of Vitruvius. B. The plan and elevation is important in design and construction of the building. C. There are 3 aspects in every building that have to be considered: a. The comoditá Usefulness b. Durability c. Beauty D. When each member (membro) is givenappropriate position one can find convenience in the design. a. The correct position of these members depend directly on the precise location of the logia (hall, rooms, cellars) i. Uses an analogy of the human body to describe the members of a building—and that they should act together and function as a whole b. Types of Materials and how they should be aquired i. Timber: cut during the autumnand winter time-trees recover energy from the roots and its strength is dispersed all through the summer. 1. Store in a place protected from the elements ii. Stones: Natural and Man- made -The natural stone is dug out from quarries and used to used build walls or lime. -Pietra viva= Stone which is soft and fragile. - Man-made stones (bricks) 1. Mattone = A type of brick used on monumental buildings(public buildings) -There are 3 kinds of sand or gravel: a. From quarry b. River c. Sea 2. Quarry: a. Best quality stone b· colors: black, white, red, charcoal. iii. River sand: Good for plastering 1. Limestone is better if it’s made of very hard, compact white stone which when fired becomes lighter. c. Iron, lead and copper-most commonly used metals in buildings i. Iron is used commonly used tomake nails, hinges and bolts. ii. Lead is used to cover palaces, temples, towers and other public buildings. It is also utilized to fabricate pipes and channels. iii. Copper is used to cover the façade of public buildings. - The foundation is the underground part which supports all the parts of the building. -The materials used to build foundations are rock, tufa and scananto. -The different typesof walls =

· Reticulated · Quadrello (Made of brick) · Cementi ( concrete) E. -Wall construction method= i. 1-Corner made of bricks 1. 2-Courses of bricks that bind the whole wall 2. 3-Reticulated work 3. 4-Inner part of the wall made out of concrete.

II. The Second Book on Architecture A. Chapter I, On the Decorum or Suitability i. Buildings should be suitable for those who will inhabitthem. ii. Buildings should have decorum, i.e. its parts should correspond to the whole and to each other) B. Chapter II, On the Planning of Rooms and Other Places i. The beautiful parts of a building should be seen. The “ugly” parts should be hidden. ii. The “beautiful” and “ugly” parts are interdependent. C. Chapter IV, On the Tuscan Atrium i. Atrium was one of the most remarkable designs of theancients. ii. The ancients had five types of atrium. D. Chapter V, On the Atrium with Four Columns 1. The width is 3/5 of the length 2. Side passages are 1/4 of the length 3. Columns of the Corinthian and Ionic orders F. Chapter VI, On the Corinthian Atrium 1. As long as the diagonal of the square of its breadth 2.
