Resumen
In his article entitled “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?”, Mark Bittman explains that junk food is not really cheaper than homemade food.He explains why people get fast food instead of cooking at home. Also, he proposes some solutions to change the way Americans tend to eat.
Bittman asserts that ifa family of four eats at home it is half or less than half as expensive as eating at McDonald’s. Another argument the article makes is that junk food is cheaperwhen measured by the calorie in comparison to a homemade meal. Most of the calories of homemade food are classified as “healthy” while junk food is not. In addition,Bittman explains the reasons why people neither cook nor eat at home. One of the reasons is that there are so-called ‘food deserts’, which are places where it is veryhard to find food. However, the main problem is the fact that people see cooking as a work. Another problem Bittman finds is the ubiquity of fast food. There arefive fast food restaurants for every supermarket.
In addition, the author argues that hyperprocessed food is something addictive. “In other words, the more fast foodwe eat, the more we need to give us pleasure”, Bittman explains. In order to solve the problem of eating too much junk food, he points out two different cultural andpolitical actions. The cultural action consists of celebrating real food and the political requires limiting junk food marketing. Another of the solutions Bittmanproposes is to get people to see cooking as a something fun rather than bored and laborious. He concludes by arguing that cooking at home can be as fun as a carnival.
