Part one
Robert Hamilton
1806 - 1870
Chapters 1 to 7 :

1) Chronologically, tell the story of the Hamilton family in Argentina, Starting in 1824, when Robert Hamilton first came to B.A.

* 1824: Robert Hamilton comes to Argentina for the first time in search of a better economical life for his family.
* 1826: A letter is sent to Robert. It says that his sonWilliam has been born. Robert rents some land in Buenos Aires (50,000 acres).
* 1837: He returns to England to visit his wife Nell and his son William.
* 1838: Thomas Hamilton, Robert’s second son, is born.
* 1840: Sebastian Hamilton, Robert’s third son, is born.
* 1846: Robert travels to England in order to visit again to his family.
* 1850: Nell Hamilton, after having miscarried ababy, dies from child bed fever. Robert returns to Argentina, he takes William with him and leaves Sebastian and Thomas with their aunt Leticia.
In a visit to Robert’s estancia, Robert and his son find an Argentinian girl named María who was almost dead. She tells them that her parents had been killed by the Governor Rosas’ Military men. Rosas had also stated that her land was now his.Some months later, William lets María know that she is with child due to the abuse she had to bear.
Robert Hamilton marries María and recuperates her lands but he doesn’t give them to her, he just keeps her family’s 100,000 acres of land.
* 1852: María’s child is born and she decides to name her Manuela.
* 1854: Frederick, María Rodriguez and Robert Hamilton´s son, is born.
* 1864:Robert asks his youngest sons to come to Argentina with him.
When they come to this country, Robert and William tell them the way in which Robert has got all that land he owns. They are taken to the estancia which they would baptize as ‘Los Mistos’.
Sebastian meets Lucero, a gaucho who would come to be one of his closest friends.
* 1865: Robert goes to Los Misros to visit his sons.Sebastian runs a race against a gaucho called Mariano at Silverio’s pulpería. He loses the race because of Mariano’s cheat, so he fights against his to recover his honour. He wins the fight but, unfortunately, he loses his left arm.
* 1866: Thomas builds an enormous house for him and his family. Thomas and Winifred’s son, Albert, is born.
2) When and why did Robert decide to come for thefirst time to our country?
Robert’s father told him stories about the Argentine and its gauchos when he was a little boy and since that moment he had the idea of coming to “the new world” he was told about. When he grew up and formed a family with his wife and a baby to be born, he decided to travel to our country because they were very poor and he couldn’t find a well paid job in England. Hewould always remember his father’s words. He said to Robert that Argentine would benefit and enrich those who bought land to be worked.

3) Analyze Thomas and Sebastian’s conversation. What do you think about it considering that they are two children talking?
Although the fact that Thomas and Sebastian were just children when their mother passed away, they have a conversation which was anadult like one. In that conversation they had a discussion about life problems and the pain those problems caused. They felt scared of their own death so Sebastian’s asks Thomas if everything died and he replied that books and their stories did not die, as he had a close relationship with books. After hearing this, Sebastian did not see the point of reading a book whose story was not real so fromthat moment on he decided he would not read books because he wanted to experience things for and by himself.
4) Why do you think Sebastian hates his father? What does he real feel?
At first, Sebastian shows he is jealous about his father because he caught his entire mother’s attention. Whenever his father was not at home, his mother would care very much about Sebastian and when his...
