Broadcasting Caracas 1BC

Radio was effectively born in Venezuela with Broadcasting Caracas. Under the indisputable leadership of a great pioneer, Edgar J. Anzola, the idea of founding a real radiostation was materialized.

Mr. William H. Phelps, a US scientist who came to investigate our birds and remained in Venezuela, an exclusive representative of (Radio Corporation of America) RCAinstruments, an owner of the distributor of household appliances "El Almacén Americano," (The American Store) was very enthusiastic about the project. Thanks to the effort made by Anzola together withRicardo Espina and technician Alberto López, the first radio station opened on December 11th, 1930, upstairs said company, located between the corners of La Palma and Pajaritos.

Other heralds, such asAlfredo Cortina, Mario García Arocha, Luis Alfonso Larrain, Carlos Bonett and Gonzalo Veloz Mancera, were also the cornerstones of this project. After the death of Juan Vicente Gómez (1935), the 1BCwas renamed RADIO CARACAS. Through it, Venezuelans started to enjoy national and international attractions. "El misterio de los ojos escarlata" (The mystery of the scarlet eyes) was the first majorradio soap opera, featuring Cecilia Martínez and Edgar J. Anzola, with scripts by Alfredo Cortina and Mario García Arocha.

Further, superstars such as Carlos Gardel, Pedro Vargas, Arthur Rubinsteinand Alfonso Ortiz Tirado moved an audience who made the radio their guest of honor. Years later, beginning World War II, the contact of the audience with the radio was impressive. Radio newspapersemerged, such as "El diario hablado" (The spoken daily), featuring Francisco Fossa Andersen and Abelardo Raidi, and, short time later, "El Reporter Esso" (The Esso reporter), with Amable Espina as theanchorman.
