Rise of the Planet of the Apes: How Communication is Important
The movie is about a man who creates a new drug that will cause brain cells to work better and therefore can makediseases such as Amnesia and Alzheimer’s curable. He tests the drug on Chimpanzees. All of them die except for one baby who inherited the drug genetic change. His name is Caesar. Helater evolves, develops the ability to speak and leads a revolution that eventually causes the human race into slavery to the apes.
Communication is very important in this movie. Itmight be considered one of the side topics or sub topics in the movie. Especially Non-Verbal Communication. Until the last about half hour of the music the whole basis ofcommunication between Will and Caesar is sign. Now ASL could be considered a language because Deaf people can’t speak, but it is also nonverbal because you aren’t using your voice. Anotherexample of signing is when Caesar talks to the circus chimp, who also knows sign. They communicate between each other with a method of signing.
Another importance of communication inthis movie is gestures. For example the scene where Caesar opens the gorilla’s cage, he motions to him that he is allowed to come out. At first the gorilla gives signs that he isafraid and he doesn’t want to but eventually he comes out and enjoys the freedom of the playground in the animal shelter.
Finally the last example that shows the importance ofcommunication is the climax of the whole movie. Dodge Landon is trying to get Caesar to get back in his cage taunting him with an electrocuting stick. Caesar grabs the stick and yells “NO!”which indicates that he has learned to communicate verbally. This is a revolutionary moment in the movie because now the apes aren’t just apes. They are now smarter than apes.
