Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle was a natural philosopher, chemist, physicist and Irish inventor, also known for his writings on theology. He is best known for formulating the law of Boyle and is widelyregarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, although his research and personal philosophy clearly had their roots in the alchemical tradition.Among his works, “The Sceptical Chymist” is considered a key work in the history of chemistry.
Robert Boyle was born in Lismore Castle in Waterford County, Ireland in 1627. He was the fourteenth childof a total of fifteen, son of the English aristocrat Richard Boyle, and Catherine Fenton, his second wife. Richard Boyle had arrived in Ireland in 1588, devoting himself to politics and industry, andwhen Robert was born he had large tracts of land and pointed in the administration, which make him became Lord Treasurer of the Kingdom of Ireland. When he was just a child, Robert learned to speakLatin, Greek and French, being sent, after the death of his mother, with only eight years at Eton College. At age 15 he started traveling with a French tutor. He lived about two years in Genoa andvisiting Italy in 1641, spent the winter in Florence studying the paradoxes of Galileo Galilei.
Robert moved to Ireland in 1652, but was frustrated at their inability to progress their work in the country.In a letter, he described Ireland as "a barbarous country where chemical spirits were so misunderstood, and not obtainable chemistry instruments so it was difficult to have any Hermetic thoughts init." In 1654, Boyle left Ireland by Oxford to continue his work more successfully. The lecture in 1657 by Otto von Guericke's air pump, he started, with the help of Robert Hooke, to deviseimprovements in its construction, and had as result, "The Boylean machine" or "pneumatic engine", which launched a series of experiments on the properties of air.
