Poeta español. Hijo de una familia hidalga de fuerte raigambre militar, estudió con Alberto Lista, de quien se convirtió enaventajado discípulo. Desde muy joven se sintió atraído por la literatura y por la actividad política, aficiones ambas que definirían su carrera futura. En 1823, y a raíz de la ejecución del general Riego, fundó, junto a Patricio de la Escosura, una sociedad secreta en pro de la libertad cuyos jóvenes miembros se hacían llamar los Numantinos.
