Romeo & Juliet Comparative Essay
Did you know that the Romeo & Juliet movie made in 1996 staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes is made with exactly the same script as the actual WilliamShakespeare´s play? And did you know that movie was also filmed in Mexico City? In this essay I will make obvious the difference between the Romeo and Juliet movies, one made in 1968 and the newer versionof the famous play filmed in 1996. I will also state which (between those two movies) is the one who is the best adaption to the original play. I will do this by comparing the setting and location offilming, the language spoken in the film and the character´s physical characteristics.
Firstly, I will talk about the location and the setting of both films. In the 1996 movie, they decided to makethe movie much more modern. The story takes place in the end on the 20th century. In the contrary, the 1968 movie it takes place back into the beginning of the 20th century. Nevertheless, despite thechronological location, both movies are set in “fair” Verona, where the actual play takes place even tough the 1996 is filmed in Mexico and the 1968 is filmed in the United Kingdom. In this aspect,the 1968 movie is much more similar to the play, taking in count that it is set many years ago.
Secondly, the language and slang used in both movies are not that similar as many people think theyare. The 1968 movie made many adaptations to the script; the songs in the movie are also changed a bit. Even though it sounds like if it was the real Shakespeare play, its not. In the other hand, the1996 is the exact copy of the play. It has even the same insults as the ones written. In this aspect, the 1996 is much better than the 1968 one.
Finally, in the 1996 movie, the characters are muchmore violent and there is much more blood, Mercutio is of dark skin and Tybalt is much more disrespectful. But, in the 1968 movie, the families do hate each other but they do maintain a certain line...
