Do you know the story behind Santa Claus?
The true story begins with Nicholas who was born in the third century in a village of Patara, Turkey. His familyhad a lot of money, they were wealthy. Since Nicholas was a kid he stanted our for being caring and generous.
When Nicholas´s parents died, he received a big fortune and he gave it all to the peoplein need and went to live to Myra, where he was consagrated as a bishop. He was captured and thrown into jail with many other Christians in the time of the Christian persecution by the emperor Licinio,and then Nicholas was released by the emperor Constantine.
In spite of being old he kept traveling and evangelizing. He delivered toys to children to remember that god gave us the greatest gift ofall through Christ, that there is hope for eternal life.
Legend says that there were three young ladies that wanted to get married but their father couldn’t pay, when Nicholas heard about it, onChristmas Eve, he threw three gold coins, pretending not to be seen, through their chimney and the coins fell into some wool stocking the ladies had left there to dry. That is why we hang stockings toreceive gifts.
Nicholas had a big beard because when he was in jail he grew one, and wore a bishops’ cape that distinguished him as a bishop, German Christians took this image and the story about thethree stockings to create Santa Claus.
Coca-Cola changed that image, they say Santa was thin and had a red bishops’ miter, instead of that, Coca-Cola changed his image to fat and instead of the miter,the put the red hat everybody uses on Christmas.
The name Santa Claus came from an evolution of the name Saint Nicholas, then it became Saint Nikolaus and St.Nick, in the USA, then finally becameSanta Claus.
Nicholas died a 6th of December, at the age of 73 in Myra, Lycia; he was buried in his own cathedral church, where a unique relique called manna formed his grave.
