Sapere Aude, “Dare to Know.”

In the late18th century, Immanuel Kant used this phrase in his famous essay “What is Enlightenment?”. This essay gotgood regards because it talks about the lifestyle in the western world during that period of time.
Originally, this Latin phrase was used to advise peopleto “trust their own reason”, it means that you can doubt of someone else`s word, you don´t have to believe in something that sounds strange for you andthat automatically makes you doubt your own logic or impression of a situation. If something doesn’t make sense to you, figure it out. The policyof Sapere Aude means not resting on your laurels, not blindly trusting the “experts” and not always accepting tradition as the best choice. Age and repetitiondo not always equal wisdom. Education, research and experience are what lead to understanding, and it is understanding that allows us to explainsomething.
It is vital that people understand information and explanations without relying on the opinion of others. We need to recognize there are things thatwe don´t know but until you have “dared to know” through questioning, experiencing and learning, you shouldn’t trust a piece of information very easily. For example, If a friend tells you a restaurant is great and you recommend it to someone else based on what your friend said, you open yourself up tonot being able to explain why it is great or why it isn’t. So go to the restaurant yourself, get the experience and then decide to recommend it or not.
